چکیده
Low concentration additions of silver to Al-Cu-Mg alloys can lead to the formation of platelike precipitates, designated n , is formed on { 11 1 ] planes. Although the morphology of these precipitates has been extensively studied, little information exists about the chemistry of the n precipitates, and in particular, about local elemental segregation. In this paper we report the results obtained in a series of experiments carried out in the Oxford atom probe laboratory on the microchemistry of both n and 8' precipitates in an Al-Cu-Mg-Ag alloy. The n precipitates are found to be richer in magnesium and silver than the e' precipitates, but are found to have a lower copper content. Studies of coherent interfaces of then precipitates suggest that there is no preferential segregation of magnesium or silver to these interfaces.

Clustering and Segregation of Mg and Ag Atoms during the Precipitation Processes in Al(-Li)-Cu-Mg-Ag Alloys
This paper reports three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) results of solute clusters and precipitates in early aging stages of Al-Cu(-Li) alloys containing small amounts of Ag and Mg atoms. In an as-quenched Al-1.9Cu-0.3Mg-0.2Ag (at.%) alloy, solute atoms are uniformly dissolved. On aging for 5 s at 180°C, Ag and Mg atoms form co-clusters. These co-clusters do not have well defined shape, but they...
متن کاملATOM PROBE CHARACTERIZATION OF PREPRECIPITATE CLUSTERS AND PRECIPITATES IN Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) ALLOYS
Pre-precipitation clustering and chemical nature of the metastable precipitates in aged Al-Mg-Si(-Cu) alloys have been investigated by atom probe field ion microscopy (APFIM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for better understanding of the two-step aging behavior and the effect of excess Si. After a prolonged natural aging, co-clusters of Mg and Si atoms are observed in addition to se...

Evolution of plate-like precipitate of the W phase in an Al-1.9Cu-0.3Mg-0.2Ag (at.%) alloy has been investigated by three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) techniques. In an as-quenched alloy, all solute atoms are uniformly dissolved. After 5 s aging at 180¡C, coclusters of Ag and Mg atoms are present. Initially, these co-clusters do not have well defined ...

The dependence of the mechanism of age hardening in Al-Mg-Si alloys on their Si content, the pre-aging conditions and addition of Cu has been investigated. For this purpose, the solute clusters and the metastable precipitates in aged Al-Mg-Si alloys have been characterized by a three dimensional atom probe (3DAP) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Atom probe analysis results have revea...
